In a previous post, we went over signs that your Northern Colorado & Southern Wyoming home needs a new roof, including leaks, stains, peeling paint, warped or missing shingles, or granule loss on the shingles. If you have seen these signs on your own roof or in your home and are shopping around for a roofing contractor for installation, you will need to decide on a type of roof material. The roofers at Denali Roofing are more than happy to go over every detail so you get the best material for your home that will last the longest and at the best price. To help you get a head start on researching types of roof materials, here is some basic information on each kind.

Dimensional shingles are basically the same as asphalt, but give your roof a unique aesthetic. A dimensional shingle is made up of two layers of asphalt shingles that are bonded together, which gives the roof a three-dimensional look. Even though this material is more expensive, it does add longevity, durability, and versatility. A dimensional roof could last up to 40 years with the right maintenance.

Asphalt

The most common type of roof material, a roof installed with asphalt shingles can last over 20 years with the right maintenance. Asphalt shingles are typically made with a fiberglass material but can be coated with a zinc plating or can be given a coat of laminate to further protect the roof. These additions to a typical asphalt roof, however, will increase the cost.

Wood and Shake

If you want a unique look for your Northern Colorado roof, cedar or redwood shingles are a popular choice. What’s the difference between shingles and shake? Shingles are often created with a machine, and shake is typically handmade to give the roof a rugged look. While you will get a beautiful roof, this material is more expensive and will typically only last between eight and 25 years.

Tile shingles are becoming more and more popular and are available in a variety of colors and shapes, giving you an opportunity to create a custom look for your roof. This material does give you a long-lasting roof, but should only be used for homes that can withstand the weight. Tile shingles will cost similarly to wood shingles, but the benefit of this material is that it can last over 50 years.

Aluminum

You can create a custom look with an aluminum roof as well with a baked enamel that comes in colors like red, green, or white. Aluminum roofs are lightweight and use an interlocking nailing flange installation so that nails never penetrate the shingle. This type of metal roof can last longer than asphalt shingles and can even help lower utility costs by keeping heat out of your home.

When it comes to roof installation, you have a lot of options for material and even roofing contractor. With Denali Roofing, serving the entire Northern Colorado area, you can be confident that you’ll get a solid roof at an affordable price.
